Congratulations to Purnima Barua (CMCL 2015), who served as Organizing Secretary of the 2017 National Conference on Health Professions Education (NCHPE), held November 7-11, 2017, at Jorhat Medical College in Jorhat, India. The theme of the conference was, “Faculty Development: Expanding Horizons…Fostering Change.” The NCHPE provides a platform for key stakeholders in health professions education in India to share scholarship, research, experiences, and educational strategies. It has been held nine times between 2007 and 2017, at various locations across India; however, this year’s conference was especially notable, as it was held for the first time in the eastern region of India.

Congratulations to Surapaneni Krishna Mohan (CMCL 2009), who was appointed earlier this month to serve as Dean of the College of Medicine and Professor and Head of the Department of Biochemistry at Texila American University, East Bank Demerara, Guyana. Dr. Mohan also recently received the Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Award for Teaching Excellence – 2017 and the Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Award for Young Scientists – 2017, both awarded by Marina Labs.

Congratulations to Omayma Hamed (PHIL 2011), who was recently promoted to Consultant for the Deanship of Quality and Academic Accreditation at King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Dr. Hamed reports that her promotion was a consequence of her FAIMER project, which focused on curriculum evaluation and educational quality assurance and has since been expanded from the Faculty of Medicine to the whole university. The project flourished into exemplary full accreditation at the Faculty level and now extends to help other Faculties achieve their goals through the Deanship of Quality and Academic Accreditation/Vice Presidency of Quality and Development at King Abdulaziz University.
Zareen Zaidi Receives Ph.D. in Medical Education from Maastricht University

Congratulations to Zareen Zaidi (PHIL 2008), who recently received her Ph.D. in Medical Education from Maastricht University, Netherlands. Dr. Zaidi’s dissertation consists of four independent but interrelated research studies published in medical education journals, focused on the visibility of sociocultural interactions of FAIMER and Maastricht University faculty and participants. She is the first FAIMER Fellow to complete her thesis through a collaborative process with FAIMER faculty, using FAIMER data. One of her studies will be published in Academic Medicine next month, and has been selected for the Research in Medical Education (RIME) Research and Review Paper award. Dr. Zaidi’s dissertation is also published as an e-book by the Maastricht University Press.
Vivek Saoji Is Appointed Vice Chancellor of KLE University
Congratulations to Vivek Saoji (PHIL 2003, IFME 2005), who was recently appointed Vice Chancellor of KLE University, Belgaum, India. Prior to this appointment, he served as Dean of Bharati Vidyapeeth University Medical College, Pune, for more than 10 years. Dr. Saoji reports that KLE University is one of India’s premier health sciences universities in the private sector, with an excellent medical education department, a strong research foundation, and many international collaborations. We wish him the best of luck in this new role!

This annual award recognizes an individual who has either made a significant contribution in teaching or contributed to the development of scholarship in the discipline of health sciences education. Dr. Frantz received the award during the 10th annual SAAHE Conference, held July 6-8, 2017, in Potchefstroom, South Africa.

Dr. Pai received the Outstanding Professor Award for the Best Basic Sciences Teacher (Year 2), the Best Teaching Professor Award in the Disease Immunity Therapeutics Course, the Most Approachable Teacher Award, and the Most Entertaining Professor Award.

Congratulations to Eliana Amaral (PHIL 2003), Co-Director of the Brazil-FAIMER Regional Institute, who was recently appointed Vice President for Undergraduate Studies at Universidade Estadual de Campinas (Unicamp) in São Paulo, Brazil. In this new role, Dr. Amaral will support the faculty, educational managers, and 19,000 students from 66 undergraduate courses, including health; science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM); and the humanities.
Col. Anuj Chawla Is Awarded Chief of Army Staff Commendation

Congratulations to Col. Anuj Chawla (PHIL 2011), who was awarded a Chief of Army Staff Commendation for distinguished service on Army Day, January 15, 2017. Col. Chawla’s citation for the award, initiated by the Dean of Armed Forces Medical College in Pune, is based on work done in the field of medical education. An extract of his citation states that, “As Head of the Department of Physiology, [he] displayed unparalleled academic and professional brilliance and commitment of the highest order to reform medical education in India, bringing singular credit to the Armed Forces Medical Services.”
