Ciraj Ali Mohammed Leads Assessment Workshop in Malaysia

FAIMER Fellows from Manipal University organized a faculty development workshop on “Assessment Strategies” for medical and dental faculty, held at the Dato Padmanabhan Hall, Melaka Manipal Medical College, Melaka Campus, Malaysia, on March 16, 2013. Prof. Ciraj Ali Mohammed (CMCL 2008, PHIL 2010, IFME 2013) led the workshop with an interactive session on the “Whys and Hows of Student Assessment.” He also chaired a session on formative assessment that highlighted the importance of assessment for learning. This was followed by a group activity on peer assessment which was orchestrated by Prof. Soumendra Sahoo (CMCL 2012). Prof. Adinegara Abas (CMCL 2011) then set the groups to the task of blueprinting and standard setting. The scientific sessions concluded with a talk on simulation-based assessment techniques by Prof. Elango Sambandam (PHIL 2010).

Dr. Mohan recently completed the Joint Master of Health Professions Education (JMHPE) program overseen by Maastricht University in The Netherlands and Suez Canal University in Egypt. Dr. Mohan received his Professional Master of Health Professions Education (M.H.P.E.) degree on April 28, 2012, during the graduation ceremony held at Suez Canal University.

Dr. Mohan also successfully fulfilled the requirements of the Essential Skills in Medical Education (ESME) course, conducted by the Association for Medical Education in Europe (AMEE) and the University of Dundee, Scotland, and was granted an ESME Certificate in Medical Education on July 31, 2012.

Additionally, Dr. Mohan has been admitted to Membership of the Academy of Medical Educators, UK, and awarded the Chartered Scientist (CSci) qualification, which represents a single chartered mark for all scientists, recognizing high levels of professionalism and competence in science, by The Science Council and The Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) in the United Kingdom.

Congratulations to Dinesh Badyal (CMCL 2007, PHIL 2009), who was awarded an M. L. Gupta Prize in Medical Education and Technology by the Association of Physiologists and Pharmacologists of India (APPI) for the year 2012 in recognition of his substantial contributions to medical education and technology, with special reference to physiology/pharmacology or allied sciences in India. The award was presented during the inaugural session of the Annual Conference of Physiologists and Pharmacologists of India (APPICON 2012), held at Subharti Medical College, Meerut, on December 18, 2012, where Dr. Badyal also delivered a speech on “Medical Education in India: Effectiveness and Relevance of Faculty Development Programs in India.”

Dandekar SP, Maksane SN, McKinley D. A survey validation and analysis of undergraduate medical biochemistry practical curriculum in Maharashtra, India. Indian Journal of Clinical Biochemistry. 2012;27(1):52-60.

The article provides analysis of a study of the opinions of biochemistry faculty members at Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS) on the efficacy of the university’s biochemistry practical curriculum in achieving specified learning objectives. Strengths and weaknesses of the existing MUHS curriculum are identified, and a case is made for restructuring the curriculum and introducing a modified curriculum with more clinical relevance.
