Description of accreditation organization

Under the authority of the Ministry of Education and former Ministry of Health, the Working Committee for the Accreditation of Medical Education (WCAME) was set up in 2008, to conduct the accreditation of basic medical programs in China.

Major responsibilities of the WCAME include:

  • Stipulating and revising the accreditation standards and guidelines for medical programs;
  • Formulating annual, middle- and long-term programs of accreditation;
  • Appointing assessment teams for the accreditation of medical programs;
  • Reviewing accreditation reports and recommendations and submitting them to the Expert Committee for approval;
  • Undertaking international cooperation related to accreditation and facilitating educational research;
  • Providing training to accreditation assessors and the institutions to be accredited; and
  • Establishing and maintaining a database for accreditation activities, a database of potential assessors, and an accreditation website.

* This accrediting agency is currently recognized by the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) Programme for Recognition of Accreditation Agencies. This recognition by WFME does not imply that all medical schools operating in this country are currently accredited by the agency. Please refer to the accrediting agency directly for information regarding the accreditation status of specific medical schools.
