FAIMER®, a division of Intealth™, offers matched international medical graduates (IMGs) the opportunity to take a free learning module titled “Introduction to the US Electronic Health Record (EHR).” The module is designed to provide IMGs with helpful information regarding the use of EHRs in the United States, in preparation for their first-year U.S. residency positions.
The module was developed by FAIMER physician experts as part of its commitment to support IMGs pursuing graduate medical education in the United States. It was piloted to matched IMGs in 2023 and 83% of users reported that completing the learning module helped them feel better prepared for their residency’s EHR orientation. Eighty-four percent (84%) indicated they would recommend the learning module to other residents prior to beginning their residency.
In the module, learners are introduced to the fundamental features and capabilities of EHRs. They learn about unique features of EHRs in the United States as compared to other countries, such as legal considerations and clinical documentation. Finally, they have the opportunity to practice using an EHR to care for sample patients. Completing the “Introduction to the US Electronic Health Record (EHR)” learning module will help incoming IMGs become familiar with the look, layout, and common tasks of an EHR system, and will help prepare them for their institution’s specific EHR training.
The module is optional, and it is estimated that it will take two to four hours to complete. The module is offered at no cost to matched IMGs.
Once an IMG’s matched status is confirmed, the IMG will receive an invitation with instructions. This email will include the IMG’s unique username and password for accessing the module. IMGs are not permitted to share their username and password with others.
1. What is the EHR Module?
The EHR Module is a free resource to help international
medical graduates (IMGs) understand how electronic health records
(EHRs) are used in the United States. The goal of the module is to
allow IMGs to be better prepared for their institution-specific EHR
training. The EHR Module includes information about the principles
of how EHRs are used in the United States and provides learners with
the opportunity to practice common tasks in a working EHR.
2. Why did FAIMER create an EHR Module?
Intealth and its divisions, ECFMG® and FAIMER, are committed to
supporting IMGs who pursue graduate medical education in the United
States. Both U.S. program directors and IMGs have identified
familiarity with EHRs as an area where additional education prior to
starting residency would be helpful. While it is not possible to
provide training on the many different EHRs used at different
training institutions, most EHRs share the same basic functions.
Becoming familiar with these functions prior to starting residency
will help prepare IMGs for the specific EHR training that they will
undergo during their residency’s orientation.
3. Who is the EHR Module for?
The EHR Module is designed for IMGs who
have matched to a first-year residency position in a U.S. training program and who have not yet
started their residency.
4. How much does the EHR Module cost?
There
is no cost to use the EHR Module.
5. Is this mandatory?
The module is
optional. This opportunity may be helpful to IMGs who have matched to a U.S. residency training program and who wish to learn more about the
use of EHRs in the United States prior to beginning their residency.
Completion of this module is not required by Intealth or its
divisions, ECFMG and FAIMER.
6. How do I obtain access?
The EHR Module
is available to IMGs who have matched to a first-year residency position in a U.S. training program for the 2024-2025 academic year. Matched IMGs may contact
their training program for instructions on accessing the EHR Module.
7. I know someone who did not receive an invitation. Can they
participate in the EHR Module?
The EHR Module is available only to
IMGs who matched to a first-year residency position in a U.S. training program for the
2024-2025 academic year. Matched IMGs may contact their training
program for instructions on accessing the EHR Module. IMGs
who did not match to a first-year residency position in a U.S. training program for the
2024-2025 academic year are not eligible.
8. How long does the module take to complete?
It is estimated that this module will take two to four hours to complete.
9. How long will the module be available?
The
module will be available from May 6, 2024 through 11:59 p.m., U.S.
Eastern Time, on June 30, 2024.
10. Can I share with others?
No.
Sharing your access with others is strictly prohibited and will result
in your access being blocked and potential removal from future
learning opportunities.
11. How can I share feedback?
We encourage you
to share your feedback by completing a brief survey following the
module. Your feedback will help us improve the experience for future
IMGs. The survey link will be shared upon completion of the module.
12. What are the technical requirements?
To utilize this module, learners will need the following:
